• Manufacturing the Parametric - San Francisco Meeting

NEW LOCATION, THIS MONTH ONLY! Presenter: Michael Riggin, Design Director at Ceilings Plus and faculty member at the NewSchool of Architecture and Design

The way that architects design has changed, and with it, so has the way architectural products are manufactured. • Time for a Change - Sheldon Wolfe

When I became a specifier, in 1985, all of the projects I worked on used the "traditional" design-bid-build (DBB) delivery method. And when I started my current job at BWBR in 1996, all we used was DBB. That shouldn't be a surprise because, at the time, there was nothing else, at least in the building construction industry.

The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) was founded in 1993, coincidentally the same year that USGBC appeared. At the time, DBIA made what seemed to be overly optimistic projections of a future dominated by design-build (DB), with a corresponding decrease in design-bid-build. That prediction is nearing fulfillment, though perhaps at a slower rate than first expected.

  • President's Message: January, 2018

So, I'm sitting at my office the Tuesday morning before Thanksgiving. I'm overwhelmed by the number of client deliverables that are past due, the commitments and expectations of the next six weeks (which boils down to twenty working days), the wishes of family and friends for more time together and the 3,982 email messages waiting, opened but unsorted and unfiled, in my Outlook "IN" box. Doesn't even include the informal gatherings, hobby time, outdoor decoration and holiday TV specials I'd like to enjoy!

Then it hits me; I should be VERY thankful to have these "problems".
